How to Install an MCP Server on Claude Desktop (Mac & Windows)

4 min read

What You Need Before You Start

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the technology that allows Claude to connect to external tools, like your social media accounts via High Story. However, this functionality is currently exclusive to the Claude Desktop application. It does not work on the claude.ai web browser interface.

Before you begin, ensure you have downloaded and installed Claude Desktop for Mac or Windows, and that you have Node.js (version 18 or higher) installed on your system. You will also need your unique API token from your High Story dashboard.

Step-by-Step Installation for Mac and Windows

The installation process is incredibly simple and requires no coding knowledge. Open your Terminal (on Mac) or PowerShell (on Windows) and follow these two steps:

Step 1: Install the MCP Package

Run the following command to install the High Story server globally on your machine: `npm install -g highstory-mcp`

Step 2: Run the Setup Wizard

Next, link the server to your Claude Desktop configuration by running: `npx highstory-mcp setup`

The setup wizard will prompt you to enter your High Story API token. Paste it and press Enter. The script will automatically locate your `claude_desktop_config.json` file and inject the necessary configurations.

Verifying Your Connection

Once the setup is complete, you must completely close and restart your Claude Desktop application.

When you open a new chat, look at the bottom right corner of the text input box. You should see a small plug icon (🔌). Clicking this icon will reveal the active MCP tools, confirming that Claude is now securely connected to High Story and ready to manage your social media.

FAQ

Where is the Claude Desktop config file on Mac?
On Mac, the Claude Desktop configuration file is typically at ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json. The npx highstory-mcp setup command locates and edits this file automatically.

Where is the Claude Desktop config file on Windows?
On Windows, look in %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json. The High Story MCP setup wizard detects this path automatically on both Mac and Windows.

What Node.js version do I need for MCP servers?
Node.js 18 or higher is recommended. Run node --version in your terminal to check. Download the latest LTS version from nodejs.org if needed.

How do I know if my MCP server is working?
After restarting Claude Desktop, look for a plug icon (🔌) in the bottom right of the chat interface. If it appears, the MCP connection is active. You can test it by asking Claude to list available High Story tools.

Can I install multiple MCP servers on Claude Desktop?
Yes. Claude Desktop supports multiple simultaneous MCP servers. Each entry is added to the mcpServers object in claude_desktop_config.json with a unique key.
